Meet the Canyon Lake Team Behind Mainspring Garage Door Co.
We’re the crew that shows up when your garage door won’t budge at 6 a.m. or when you’re staring at a bent track after a Hill Country storm rolls through. Every person on this page lives within 30 minutes of Canyon Lake, answers to Carl directly, and has been through the same background check and hands-on training. What ties us together isn’t a handbook. It’s the K.E.Y.S. code: Krafted right, Every time, Your home first, Standing behind it. We’ve been doing this since 1984, and we still answer our own phones.
Our People
Carl Dutton, Owner
I started Mainspring Garage Door Co. in 1984, back when Canyon Lake was a quieter stretch of the Guadalupe and most folks still had manual doors they lifted themselves. The company name comes from the mainspring, the coil that carries every pound of a door’s weight. That’s the part I respect most, because when it fails, nothing else works. I’ve personally trained every technician on our crew as a journeyman, and I still ride along on calls when we’re backed up or when a job’s got something I’ve never seen before, which happens more often than you’d think. I keep a logbook of oddball failures: the time a black vulture got trapped in a raised door in Startzville, the spring that rusted clean through after a flood season in 2015. I live on the north side of the lake with my wife and two dogs that hate the sound of impact drivers. If you call us at 2 a.m., there’s a decent chance I’m the one picking up.
Mike R., Lead Technician
Mike’s been with us for 14 years and handles the calls nobody else wants: snapped torsion springs on 18-foot custom doors, opener logic boards fried by lightning strikes around Canyon Lake, cables that have chewed through their drums. He’s factory-certified on LiftMaster, Genie, and Chamberlain systems, and he’s the one who checks every apprentice’s first ten jobs personally. Mike grew up in Spring Branch and still fishes the Guadalupe when the water’s low enough to wade. His left pinky is slightly crooked from a spring slip in 2012, which he shows new hires as a reminder of why we block doors before we touch anything under tension. He drives the white F-250 with the dented tailgate, and he’s usually home by six unless someone’s emergency runs long.
Dolores V., Senior Installer
Dolores joined us in 2016 after eight years doing commercial dock doors in San Antonio, and she brought a precision with her that changed how we measure. She specializes in new door installations and full replacements, the kind of work where being off by a quarter-inch means a door that rubs for the next fifteen years. She’s installed Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, and Raynor doors all over the Canyon Lake area, from waterfront homes in Hancock to the newer builds creeping toward Sattler. Dolores keeps a small notebook of every house she’s worked on, with sketches of unusual header configurations or low-clearance situations, so the next tech knows what they’re walking into. She has two kids in Canyon Lake High School and coaches a youth soccer team that practices on a field where the deer don’t always clear out.
James T., Service Coordinator
James is the voice you hear when you call (210) 399-7195 at midnight on a Sunday. He’s been with Mainspring for six years and knows every technician’s location, every truck’s inventory, and which jobs from the day before might need a follow-up. He’s not reading from a script. He asks what you’re hearing, what you’re seeing, and whether the door is stuck open or closed, then he tells you honestly whether it’s a same-day fix or a safety situation where you shouldn’t try to force it. James is based in Startzville and used to do field work himself, so he can walk a homeowner through a manual release or explain why a spring replacement isn’t a weekend project. He keeps a coffee maker that sounds like a jet engine and has never once sent a technician to the wrong address.
Elena K., Apprentice Technician
Elena started with us in 2023 after leaving a warehouse job in New Braunfels where she repaired forklifts and conveyor systems. She’d never touched a garage door before, but she understood mechanical systems and wasn’t afraid of torque. She’s completed her spring and cable certification under Mike’s supervision and is working toward her opener diagnostics ticket. Elena lives in a small place near Cranes Mill with a garage door she installed herself, which she says hums slightly and keeps her humble. She asks more questions than anyone on the crew, which is exactly what we want. Her truck is the newest one in the fleet and still smells like vinyl.
One Standard, Every Job
The Canyon Lake crew works as part of a network that covers 13 communities across the region, but the standard doesn’t change when you cross a county line. Every technician arrives in a clean uniform with a background check on file. Every truck carries the springs, cables, and openers needed to finish most jobs without a parts run. Every quote is flat and final before work starts, so there are no surprises on the bill. And every completed job carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it’s not right, we come back at no charge, no paperwork, no arguing. Carl put that in place in 1984 and hasn’t wavered since. Whether you’re in Hancock, Sattler, Startzville, or right on the water, the person who answers your call and the technician who shows up are accountable to the same thing. We stand behind it.
